In pre-colonial Kenya's hinterland, political organization was based on the village level. In the years before colonization had the Maasai gained an important position, but this was weakened through internecine wars. Kikuyus and Kalijins took advantage of the Maasai's weakness to expand.

The inland groups were also influenced by Arab trade along the coast, and certain areas formed strong ties Oman and Hadhramaut ( Yemen ). The ottoman empire briefly expanded into Kenya's coastal provinces, mostly as a response to Portuguese expansion, helping to drive out the Portuguese. However, it was Oman whi left the most lasting traces. Cities like Mombasa and Lamu was controlled by Oman for long periods.

At the end of the 19th century began Great Britain to take an interest in the area. On The Berlin Conference in 1884, when the European colonial powers divided Africa between themselves, Great Britain secured Kenya. In 1894, a East African Protectorate established, and in 1920 the colony of Kenya was formally established.

The British disaced several peoe groups with theirs settler policy,whi encouraged British and other Europeans to settle in Kenya. This created conflicts regarding the distribution of land ownership that aracterizes Kenya to this day. But the British also trained Kenyan leaders and built infrastructure.

The British colonial era is best remembered in Kenya for its heavy-handed handling of The Mau Mau Rebellion in the period 1952–1956. The British interned a large number of Kenyans in prison camps in very poor conditions, in response to the rebellion on the Kenyan side, especially from the Kikuyu. An alleged leader of the rebellion, Jomo Kenyatta,was imprisoned, tried along with several other leaders, and convicted. He later became Kenya's first president and is the father of the country's president from 2013 to 2022, Uhuru Kenyatta. Another of the anti-colonial leaders, Oginga Odinga,became the country's first vice-president and later a central opposition politician. He is the father of Raila Odinga,who, among other things, was prime minister from 2008 to 2013.
